What is Rocket Math?

This program is a research-based, sequential program for learning basic addition/subtraction and multiplication/division math facts to increase fluency.  Students begin with Addition Rocket Math Level A.  In first grade, we will be beginning Rocket Math by practicing two days a week. We will take a 1 minute timed test with 56 problems. Each child has an individualized goal that is established by taking a timed number writing test.  When your child reaches his/her goal on Level A, they move to Level B.  This pattern continues through Level Z.  Then, your child will move on to Subtraction Rocket Math Level A.  If your child finishes both Addition and Subtraction, he or she will move on to Multiplication.

Each week we will practice Rocket Math two days a week. Students practice with a buddy for 2 minutes facts that are around the outside of the rocket math sheet. Then we all take a 1 minute timed quiz. When a student meets his or her personal goal, he turns the paper in to his teacher to grade. If he gets them correct and meets his goal, then he will move up 1 level to level B, etc. If he doesn’t meet his goal then he will bring the ungraded paper home to practice. It doesn’t need to be returned.

As part of your child's homework, please be sure to practice Rocket Math facts for the level your child is on (and all previous levels).  The more practice your child gets at home, the better they will do at school.  There are flashcards that you can download from my website, or you can also visit www.rocketmath.net and order their flashcards.  You can see which problems will be added at each level on the Rocket Math Sequence Chart on my website.
